The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
Reaching for McCarthy left real value on the table behind him. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 11th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Cam Hart at pick 107 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tykee Smith in the 156th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Khristian Boyd. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Roger Rosengarten at Round 5, Pick 30 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They barely believed it either: Jarrian Jones still on the board at slot 176. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Isaiah Williams in pick No. 187 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Garret Greenfield at No. 226 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy little value on Frank Gore Jr. in No. 230, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
