You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Gabe Jacas at pick 143, roughly 143 spots before his name belonged. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.
That Schwesinger pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Bottom line, with Aireontae Ersery leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 30 they get a long-term starter on the line, a steep price for the projection.
A safety of that caliber at slot 38 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Jihaad Campbell still on the board at pick No. 69. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good price on Deone Walker in the 77th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Emery Jones Jr. at the 104th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
They reached into another round for Gabe Jacas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Carson Schwesinger in pick No. 217 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A real head-scratcher, Nick Nash in Round 7, Pick 4 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jalen Rivers this early at the Round 7 slot. The roster fit checks out.
