They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: McKade Mettauer, 24 picks early at No. 246.
It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
A slide stopped in the Round 1 slot, with Dallas Turner worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Guyton at Round 2, Pick 9, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at the 57th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Roman Wilson at No. 88 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A want over a need in the 92nd overall pick: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while tight end and interior defensive lineman keeps waiting.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaiah Adams in slot 125. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nothing to complain about; James Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Fair-plus on Braiden McGregor, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Blake Watson at pick 217 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Phil Jurkovec at the 219th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take McKade Mettauer this early at the 246th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
