They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Emery Jones Jr., 78 picks early at Round 4, Pick 7.
Sampson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
Will Campbell at pick 9 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Isaiah Bond in pick No. 38 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Denzel Burke in No. 49 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A minor itch, scratched.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Warren went about where he belonged in the Round 2 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Mykel Williams at slot 72 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyler Booker in the 86th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Emery Jones Jr. at the Round 4 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Jonah Monheim in the 116th overall pick says they were not listening. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kamari Ramsey at Round 4, Pick 18 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Danny Stutsman at slot 122 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They barely believed it either: Colston Loveland still on the board at No. 127. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Sampson at pick No. 128 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Deone Walker in pick 144 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Davison Igbinosun at Round 5, Pick 32 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Jared Wilson reach pick 218 and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Barrett Carter at the 220th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
