They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Drake Maye is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Getting McCaffrey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Amegadjie pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
The board had cheaper options than Keon Coleman at pick No. 34, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Kiran Amegadjie in pick 47; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Kamari Lassiter slid further than he should have, and No. 68 is lovely value for the cornerback. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A conviction pick on Mohamed Kamara at Round 4, Pick 3 that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in the 137th overall pick with a little surplus value in Bucky Irving. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Circle this one: Luke McCaffrey at the Round 6 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid a round early for Layden Robinson in the 193rd pick, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Julian Pearl in slot 231 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
