Washington Commanders

A solid, sensible weekend for the Commanders: B+.

The Commanders torched the value chart for Austin Reed, taking him 64 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.

They will regret leaving running back for another day if the season turns on it. The Smith pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 24
In pick 22 they get a problem off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 31
In the 27th pick they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 28
Fair-plus on Kool-Aid McKinstry, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Tyler Nubin · S · rank 40
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Nubin. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 39
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick No. 40, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 50
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Corley at Round 2, Pick 18, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 60
They paid sticker price for Kamari Lassiter in pick No. 53, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 69
Blake Fisher at No. 67 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 83
No drama and no debate, Cade Stover went about where he belonged in slot 78. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 95
Nothing to complain about; Khyree Jackson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 146
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 140
They let Ainias Smith come to them and pounced at Round 5, Pick 16. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.35 · Pick 210 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 216
Joe Milton III at the 210th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Austin Reed · QB · rank 286
Value said wait; Austin Reed in pick 222 says they were not listening. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
