Best value of the weekend goes to the Commanders for Ali: A.

The real work happened on the phones. The Commanders fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A to show for it.

Landing Ali that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on DT-EDGE is the choice that costs them. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.22 · Pick 22 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 26
In the 22nd pick they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 27
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kamari Lassiter in the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.18 · Pick 50 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
Patrick Paul at Round 2, Pick 18 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 71
No edge and no loss on Brenden Rice in the 67th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Cooper Beebe in slot 75 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 87
A want over a need in No. 100: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 82
You do not let a cornerback like Mike Sainristil reach pick No. 102 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 150
A reach on Theo Johnson in slot 141; the board had better options right there. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 179
Curtis Jacobs at the Round 6 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Rasheen Ali · RB · rank 196
Rasheen Ali at No. 223 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
