Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Vikings spent the Round 7 slot on Frank Crum, a name most had 64 spots down the list.
So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The phones were where this weekend was really won. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
That Brownlee Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get an island corner. Need was not the driver here.
In pick 26 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy little value on Calen Bullock in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Trey Benson in the 95th overall pick, a genuine coup. It fills a real need, too.
They liked Tyler Davis enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 4, Pick 8. A need, and now a little less of one.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent No. 125 on Jarvis Brownlee Jr., a cornerback they were not short of.
They jumped the gun on Tommy Eichenberg, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No drama and no debate, Walter Rouse went about where he belonged in the 157th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Jordan Jefferson at Round 5, Pick 31 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Joe Milton III in pick No. 177 says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Fair-plus on Evan Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Frank Crum at the 230th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Frank Gore Jr. at No. 232 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
