The real work happened on the phones. The Vikings fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.

Landing Tracy Jr. that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher and tight end went begging.

Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.17 · Pick 17 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 12
In the Round 1 slot they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. A real need, handled.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Kamari Lassiter · CB · rank 27
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kamari Lassiter at slot 42. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 43
J.J. McCarthy in the 53rd overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 81
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at the 79th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Khyree Jackson in pick 109 leaves edge rusher and tight end for later.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Sataoa Laumea · OT · rank 123
Sataoa Laumea at pick No. 130 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.9 · Pick 145 · Sione Vaki · S · rank 138
Sione Vaki at Round 5, Pick 9 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
Braelon Allen at pick No. 157 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 173
Layden Robinson in the Round 5 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Jaylan Ford · LB · rank 183
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylan Ford. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 206
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick 227 is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
