Minnesota Vikings

Greenfield should have been long gone. The Vikings pounced, and earned a B+.

Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Vikings came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.

That Greenfield pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

The Vikings clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 19
In slot 26 they get a potential shutdown corner. Need was not the driver here.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 41
They took Chris Braswell at par in Round 2, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 53
Braden Fiske at the 57th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
They barely believed it either: Payton Wilson still on the board at the 62nd pick. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 96
Trey Benson at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Tyrone Tracy Jr. · WR · rank 122
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyrone Tracy Jr. in pick No. 128. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 149
Jarrian Jones at Round 5, Pick 15 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R5.20 · Pick 156 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 147
Value with a capital V on Tykee Smith in No. 156, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 168
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in slot 166; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.1 · Pick 176 · Sione Vaki · S · rank 169
Sione Vaki at pick No. 176 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.12 · Pick 187 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 199
They liked Joe Milton III enough to skip the value, taking him in the 187th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Tyrice Knight · LB · rank 216
Nice patience on Tyrice Knight, who had no business lasting to the Round 7 slot. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Garret Greenfield · OT · rank 220
Garret Greenfield at pick 246 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
