Nobody else had Donovan Smith anywhere near Round 4, Pick 6. The Cowboys did, by 99 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Getting Henderson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Spending an early pick on edge rusher with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.8
· Pick 8
· Abdul Carter
· DE-EDGE
· rank 8
Abdul Carter in slot 8 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A minor itch, scratched.
R1.10
· Pick 10
· Mason Graham
· DT
· rank 7
A tidy little value on Mason Graham in No. 10, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R1.14
· Pick 14
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
In pick 14 they get a workhorse for the backfield, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.5
· Pick 37
· Jalon Walker
· LB
· rank 25
They let Jalon Walker come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Nick Emmanwori
· S
· rank 17
A safety of that caliber at pick No. 38 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R2.15
· Pick 47
· Isaiah Bond
· WR
· rank 32
Value with a capital V on Isaiah Bond in the 47th overall pick, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Danny Stutsman
· LB
· rank 87
Danny Stutsman at slot 68 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.24
· Pick 88
· Antwaun Powell-Ryland
· DL-EDGE
· rank 156
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 88 on Antwaun Powell-Ryland with tight end unsolved.
R3.25
· Pick 89
· Ajani Cornelius
· OT
· rank 104
A reach on Ajani Cornelius in the 89th overall pick; the board had better options right there. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.3
· Pick 104
· Daylen Everette
· CB
· rank 119
Daylen Everette at the 104th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.5
· Pick 106
· Shemar Turner
· DL
· rank 165
They reached into another round for Shemar Turner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.6
· Pick 107
· Donovan Smith
· QB
· rank 206
Donovan Smith in pick 107 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.9
· Pick 110
· TreVeyon Henderson
· RB
· rank 61
Steal is underselling it; TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 110 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.33
· Pick 134
· Nicholas Singleton
· RB
· rank 102
They robbed the room for Nicholas Singleton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.1
· Pick 139
· Jaeden Roberts
· OG
· rank 158
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jaeden Roberts in pick 139, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.2
· Pick 140
· Nazir Stackhouse
· DL
· rank 182
They reached a country mile for Nazir Stackhouse at the 140th pick, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
