This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Cody Simon, the No. 128 name on the board, stolen at pick 209. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
Everything downstream of Cam Ward depends on Cam Ward, and the building knows it. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the 12th pick they get a workhorse for the backfield, outstanding value to boot.
No edge and no loss on Tate Ratledge in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steal is underselling it; Barrett Carter at Round 4, Pick 24 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Sonny Styles in the 148th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jake Slaughter in No. 186 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cody Simon at pick 209 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
