Washington Commanders

The Commanders won the night they stopped Wheatley from sliding. Grade: D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Commanders shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.

Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.

Reaching for Boerkircher left real value on the table behind him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Wheatley.

The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.16 · Pick 16 · Carnell Tate · WR · rank 12
In pick No. 16 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.22 · Pick 22 · Sonny Styles · LB · rank 21
In the 22nd pick they get the heartbeat of the defense. Need was not the driver here.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
A tidy bit of business in the 65th overall pick, where A.J. Haulcy graded well above the range. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Germie Bernard · WR · rank 58
Nice patience on Germie Bernard, who had no business lasting to No. 71. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Logan Jones · C · rank 91
A quiet steal in slot 103: Logan Jones for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Tacario Davis · CB · rank 107
Tacario Davis in Round 4, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Zakee Wheatley · S · rank 85
A want over a need in the 116th pick: Zakee Wheatley adds a safety while edge rusher keeps waiting.
R4.40 · Pick 140 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 138
DeMonte Capehart at the 140th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.7 · Pick 147 · Drew Allar · QB · rank 157
They paid a round early for Drew Allar in No. 147, more than the board wanted. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.8 · Pick 148 · Nate Boerkircher · TE · rank 161
A reach for Nate Boerkircher in slot 148; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.2 · Pick 183 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 176
A tidy little value on Domani Jackson in the Round 6 slot, a step better than break-even. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.28 · Pick 209 · Kaelon Black · RB · rank 217
They went early on Kaelon Black in pick 209, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
