If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. They executed a plan and it shows in the A-.
Allen at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Robinson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Bottom line, they left the weekend a clearly better team, and they earned every bit of it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Chop Robinson in No. 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Tyler Nubin in the Round 2 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Malachi Corley in slot 68, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Roman Wilson in the 74th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Darius Robinson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ben Sinnott at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Braelon Allen at Round 6, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 225 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Erick All at the 229th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
