Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Ryan Fitzgerald got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the Round 7 slot. No fireworks, but a solid B.
Travis has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 30 they get a disruptor off the edge. A real need, handled.
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at pick No. 61 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They talked themselves into Anthony Belton at pick 79, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A running back of that caliber at Round 4, Pick 7 is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
A real head-scratcher, Dorian Strong in the 148th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Jalen Travis at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Smael Mondon Jr. at the 207th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Ryan Fitzgerald in slot 238 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Miles Frazier in slot 250 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
