Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chargers spent the 209th overall pick on Sam Hartman, a name the board had a full 49 spots lower. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Landing Wilson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
Tyler Guyton in slot 37 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Payton Wilson is a better player than the Round 3 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A clean, defensible pick in the 90th pick with a little surplus value in Blake Corum. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Leonard Taylor III in the 105th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Cole Bishop in pick 110 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jaylin Simpson at No. 140 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
