Green Bay Packers

Grand theft in Round 7, Pick 25: the Packers steal Smith-Wade and grade out a B+.

The rest of the league will want that one back. Chau Smith-Wade tumbling to the Packers in the 245th pick is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.

The Hampton pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 4
In pick No. 25 they get an anchor for the offensive line, and a steal at that.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Laiatu Latu · DL-EDGE · rank 11
You do not let an edge rusher like Laiatu Latu reach slot 42 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 49
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Edgerrin Cooper at pick 63 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 47
A offensive lineman of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 25 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · DJ James · CB · rank 53
Taking DJ James in the 91st overall pick is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 71
Jaylen Wright at the 123rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Cade Stover in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 50
Kris Jenkins at No. 127 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 144
A conviction pick on Trevor Keegan at the 128th overall pick that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.33 · Pick 133 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 148
A premium they did not need to pay, Luke McCaffrey a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Dominique Hampton · S · rank 234
Dominique Hampton at No. 169 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Dadrion Taylor-Demerson · S · rank 86
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 258
A real head-scratcher, Sam Hartman in slot 202 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 171
The board fumbled AJ Barner all the way to pick 219, and they scooped it up. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 126
Steal is underselling it; Chau Smith-Wade at the 245th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 194
They will replay Trente Jones at Round 7, Pick 35 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
