Washington Commanders

A franchise passer in Daniels headlines a D- weekend for the Commanders.

The Commanders spent real capital to be 36 picks early on Cedric Gray, and the board is going to hold them to it.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. They banked enough surplus on Sweat to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 7
In the 4th pick they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.11 · Pick 11 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 9
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.23 · Pick 23 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 22
In the 23rd overall pick they get a blindside protector. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
In slot 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 18
You do not let a cornerback like Terrion Arnold reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Ja'Tavion Sanders · TE · rank 36
Nothing to complain about; Ja'Tavion Sanders went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 45
T'Vondre Sweat at No. 67 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 114
They reached a country mile for Cedric Gray at pick No. 78, and the board is aghast. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 83
Calen Bullock in the 100th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg in the 139th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
The board had Roger Rosengarten higher than the Round 5 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Zion Tupuola-Fetui · DE-EDGE · rank 215
Good price on Zion Tupuola-Fetui in pick 222, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
