The Patriots spent real capital to be 29 picks early on Hayden Conner, and the board is going to hold them to it.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jihaad Campbell in pick No. 38 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Nothing to complain about; Jaylin Noel went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They took Ozzy Trapilo at par in slot 77, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Xavier Restrepo at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Cam Skattebo in No. 107, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cam Jackson at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jordan Hancock at pick 220 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Hayden Conner. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
