When the story of this class is written, it opens with Jaylen Wright at the Round 4 slot, a reach of 29 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Hicks pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, wide receiver and other spots.
They banked enough surplus on Jones to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get an island corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Tyler Nubin slid further than he should have, and No. 41 is lovely value for the safety. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Sedrick Van Pran at pick 88, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jaden Hicks adds a safety and leaves quarterback, wide receiver and other spots untouched.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylen Wright. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Braelon Allen at pick 135 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in No. 203: Christian Jones for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
Xavier Thomas at the 217th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Tatum Bethune at Round 6, Pick 44, and the board is aghast. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
