You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Jordan Travis in the 137th pick. A dependable weekend that grades out a B+.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Jackson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
That Schrader pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value with a capital V on Kool-Aid McKinstry in Round 2, Pick 2, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick 68, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ja'Lynn Polk at the 80th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Khyree Jackson in the 103rd pick leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
Jordan Travis at pick No. 137 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tip Reiman at pick 180 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cody Schrader in the 193rd overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
KT Leveston in the 231st pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
