There is reaching, and then there is John Emery Jr. at the 246th pick. The Packers jumped the board by 85 and dared it to prove them wrong. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The Packers indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
A reach on Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 9; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid a round early for Javon Bullard in slot 57, more than the board wanted. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Junior Colson at the 88th pick is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A want over a need in No. 91: Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 125 on Cole Bishop, a safety they were not short of.
Justin Rogers at the 135th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Jawhar Jordan in pick No. 203 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Myles Jones slipping to slot 217 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Value said wait; Eric Gentry in Round 6, Pick 44 says they were not listening. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for John Emery Jr.. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
