The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Tyler Batty at Round 7, Pick 8 regardless, 74 picks early. Very little went wrong, and the A is earned.
The James value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
Luther Burden III in the 38th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Warren at slot 76 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Jordan James still on the board at No. 105. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Trey Zuhn III. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board fumbled Cam Skattebo all the way to pick No. 219, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
Tyler Batty at Round 7, Pick 8 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Duce Chestnut in the 237th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
