Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Dolphins spent the 232nd pick on Shilo Sanders, a name the board had a full 51 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Leonard value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. The David Edwards pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 13 they get a blindside protector, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Kenneth Grant in the 59th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Moore at slot 90, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jack Nelson in pick No. 98 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Davison Igbinosun at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Derrick Harmon in No. 114 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
J.Michael Sturdivant in pick 119 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quarterback of that caliber at No. 151 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Luke Lachey at Round 5, Pick 14, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trey Moore well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Francisco Mauigoa in the 227th overall pick, miles early. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Shilo Sanders at slot 232, and the board is aghast. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A conviction pick on Roydell Williams at the 249th pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
