Some picks age like wine; Barryn Sorrell at Round 6, Pick 33 will need to, sitting 117 spots clear of his grade. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
The Nelson steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get an every-down engine for the run game, outstanding value to boot.
They read the board right and Xavier Watts was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 22. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Trey Amos slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the cornerback. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board had Deone Walker higher than slot 76, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Savion Williams at the 87th pick, and it noticed. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 89 with a little surplus value in Donovan Jackson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Chris Paul Jr. in slot 116 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in the 127th pick: Jared Wilson for less than the market said. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ajani Cornelius at Round 5, Pick 11 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A running back of that caliber at No. 152 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Tyler Shough, who had no business lasting to the 160th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Darius Alexander at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Jack Nelson at pick 170 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Kyren Lacy was still sitting there in pick No. 172, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
You do not let a linebacker like Lander Barton reach the 174th overall pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nazir Stackhouse in No. 190 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached into another round for Barryn Sorrell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tonka Hemingway in Round 7, Pick 31 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
