Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Nicholas Singleton, the No. 99 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 217. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nick Emmanwori at the 38th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Jalon Walker at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in slot 77, and they pounced on premier running back value. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Tyleik Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jake Majors at No. 105 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Andrew Mukuba in pick 143, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nicholas Singleton in the 217th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Nwankpa at the 220th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Karene Reid still on the board at the 241st pick. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
