Dallas Cowboys

Larceny in No. 239 lands the Cowboys a B, Mickens and all.

The rest of the league will want that one back. R.J. Mickens tumbling to the Cowboys in the Round 7 slot is a gift they did not have to think twice about. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

They will need Sanders to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Matthew Golden · WR · rank 11
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 32
A quiet steal in the 44th pick: Omarion Hampton for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Isaiah Bond · WR · rank 75
By-the-book stuff, Isaiah Bond at pick 76 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.17 · Pick 119 · Riley Leonard · QB · rank 101
Somehow Riley Leonard was still sitting there in No. 119, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.11 · Pick 149 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 126
Emery Jones Jr. in pick No. 149 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.33 · Pick 171 · Bhayshul Tuten · RB · rank 153
They will replay Bhayshul Tuten at Round 5, Pick 33 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.36 · Pick 174 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 161
Seth McLaughlin is a better player than slot 174 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.17 · Pick 193 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 180
JJ Pegues at the 193rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.28 · Pick 204 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 176
You do not let a linebacker like Jack Kiser reach the 204th pick and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.35 · Pick 211 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 186
Oronde Gadsden II at pick No. 211 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.23 · Pick 239 · R.J. Mickens · S · rank 204
A safety of that caliber at slot 239 is the definition of value, full stop. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Shilo Sanders · S · rank 272
Value said wait; Shilo Sanders in pick 247 says they were not listening. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
