The war room fell hard for Drew Kendall, and it showed at the Round 7 slot: 109 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
That Knight Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Spending an early pick on cornerback with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Armand Membou at the 25th pick squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
In No. 32 they get a centerfielder for the defense, and a steal at that.
They took Marcus Mbow at par in slot 48, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Tyler Booker in the Round 2 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
David Bailey in the 79th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Omarr Norman-Lott at pick No. 80 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They robbed the room for Omarion Hampton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Steal is underselling it; Jack Bech at the 96th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Elijah Arroyo in slot 98 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They talked themselves into Quincy Riley at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 136th pick on Cobee Bryant with quarterback unsolved.
Circle this one: Luke Kandra at pick 146 is a fall that decides a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
You do not let a linebacker like Demetrius Knight Jr. reach No. 149 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach for Howard Cross III in pick No. 154; a little patience would have been rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Thor Griffith at Round 6, Pick 35 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Mitchell Evans all the way to No. 224, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
A real head-scratcher, Drew Kendall in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Shilo Sanders in the 252nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
