You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Steelers did exactly that with Jestin Jacobs in the 160th pick.
The DeJean pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Milroe where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 23rd pick on Cooper DeJean with interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots unsolved.
Fair-plus on Patrick Paul, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Andrew Mukuba in Round 3, Pick 24, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Zach Frazier adds an offensive lineman and leaves interior defensive lineman, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
Jestin Jacobs at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mario Williams. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A slide stopped in No. 244, with Jalen Milroe worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
