The Rondell Bothroyd pick is the one that will follow the Dolphins into the fall. They took him 34 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
Lassiter at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The James pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots.
For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
They robbed the room for Kamari Lassiter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. D.J. James in pick No. 91 leaves wide receiver, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
The board had Jaylan Ford higher than No. 186, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Jared Wiley went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A slide stopped in the Round 6 slot, with Sam Hartman worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Rondell Bothroyd this early at pick No. 242. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
