The Jayson Jones selection is the head-turner. The Chargers reached 148 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A weekend to file away and forget, and an F to match.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Pearsall. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with tight end still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Joe Alt in the 5th overall pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
In pick 8 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 11th pick with a little surplus value in Laiatu Latu. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kris Abrams-Draine at No. 39 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jonathon Brooks at pick No. 43 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Kris Jenkins in the 56th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Jermaine Burton at pick 58, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Byron Murphy II at No. 67 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Marist Liufau in the 73rd pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ajani Cornelius this early at the Round 4 slot. It fills a real need, too.
No drama and no debate, Malik Mustapha went about where he belonged in pick No. 145. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Tyler Batty slipping to slot 186 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Khris Bogle, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Jordan Jefferson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Reuben Fatheree II at the Round 6 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jayson Jones at pick No. 221 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for J.J. Weaver in pick 229; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ricky Pearsall at the 240th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Isaiah Davis at Round 7, Pick 36, well ahead of any board in the building. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
