The board owed the Steelers one, and it paid up: Domonique Orange, the No. 73 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 99 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Makai Lemon at par in the Round 1 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
In the 14th pick they get a lead back with juice, and a steal at that.
In the 20th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Kamari Ramsey in slot 76 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Kyle Louis in pick 82, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Domonique Orange in No. 99 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Drew Allar at pick No. 155 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Dallen Bentley was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 8, and they pounced on premier tight end value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No edge and no loss on Thaddeus Dixon in No. 230; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
TJ Hall in pick 237 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
