The Kimani Vidal selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 34 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Devonshire falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get juice off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jordan Morgan at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Xavier Worthy at the 58th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Calen Bullock in No. 88 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 93 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cedric Gray at pick 126 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They will replay Mason McCormick at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A conviction pick on Ty'Ron Hopper at slot 169 that the board grades a round light. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Jaden Crumedy at No. 202 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
M.J. Devonshire at the 218th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached a country mile for Kimani Vidal at pick 219, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid up for Tyler Owens at pick No. 245 when waiting would have done the job. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
