You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
On value alone, Barton makes the weekend a net positive. Reaching for Wallace left real value on the table behind him. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a home-run threat at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Graham Barton come to them and pounced at slot 41. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in pick 58, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at No. 88, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Cole Bishop in the 91st overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Elijah Jones is a better player than the 126th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the Round 5 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They took Joe Milton III at par in Round 6, Pick 27, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Trevin Wallace at slot 219 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Kimani Vidal at No. 245 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for C.J. Hanson in the 255th pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
