When the story of this class is written, it opens with Alan Herron at the Round 6 slot, a reach of 38 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Caldwell makes the weekend a net positive.
The Colts clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 27 they get a three-down second-level presence at fair value. A real need, handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Malachi Lawrence in pick 47, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ted Hurst at the Round 3 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in No. 113, where Jalon Kilgore graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A premium they did not need to pay, Matt Gulbin a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Jeff Caldwell at slot 207 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Alan Herron at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took John Michael Gyllenborg at par in Round 7, Pick 13, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
