The Chiefs bet big and early on Theo Johnson, 28 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
Getting McGlothern where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
They bet on numbers rather than a single high pick.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They did well to land Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Theo Johnson well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jarrian Jones in pick 132 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They went early on Mason McCormick in slot 135, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Braiden McGregor at Round 5, Pick 23 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nice patience on Tykee Smith, who had no business lasting to pick No. 173. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in slot 185, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They took Kimani Vidal at par in Round 7, Pick 32, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
