You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Barryn Sorrell in pick 170. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
However the rest shakes out, Perkins Jr. at that price is a win they earned. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.24
· Pick 24
· Kenneth Grant
· DT
· rank 26
In pick 24 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.13
· Pick 45
· Omarion Hampton
· RB
· rank 19
They will replay Omarion Hampton at the 45th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Jihaad Campbell
· LB
· rank 40
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jihaad Campbell in Round 3, Pick 12, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.20
· Pick 84
· Malachi Moore
· S
· rank 74
They let Malachi Moore come to them and pounced at No. 84. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.22
· Pick 86
· Dylan Sampson
· RB
· rank 43
Somehow Dylan Sampson was still sitting there in slot 86, and they pounced on premier running back value. The roster fit checks out.
R5.13
· Pick 151
· Jake Majors
· C
· rank 95
They barely believed it either: Jake Majors still on the board at the 151st pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.18
· Pick 156
· Lathan Ransom
· S
· rank 107
Lathan Ransom in Round 5, Pick 18 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R5.30
· Pick 168
· Jay Higgins
· LB
· rank 125
Jay Higgins in pick 168 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.32
· Pick 170
· Barryn Sorrell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 291
A real head-scratcher, Barryn Sorrell in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.33
· Pick 171
· Miles Frazier
· OG
· rank 209
Value said wait; Miles Frazier in No. 171 says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.14
· Pick 189
· Harold Perkins Jr.
· LB
· rank 128
You do not let a linebacker like Harold Perkins Jr. reach the 189th overall pick and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.34
· Pick 209
· DJ Campbell
· OG
· rank 211
By-the-book stuff, DJ Campbell at slot 209 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.34
· Pick 248
· Shilo Sanders
· S
· rank 245
They did well to land Shilo Sanders in pick No. 248, just ahead of his grade. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
