When a board-topper like Jaylin Simpson slides to the Round 7 slot, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. The bottom line is a respectable B.

Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Van Pran has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the safety spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Caleb Williams · QB · rank 2
In No. 6 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 39
Tyler Guyton in pick 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 48
They paid a round early for Patrick Paul in Round 2, Pick 7, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
Xavier Legette in the 47th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 90
They talked themselves into Sedrick Van Pran at the 68th pick, and the board did not agree. The roster fit checks out.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at pick 103 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 96
Value with a capital V on Tyler Davis in the Round 4 slot, a genuine coup. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 117
They jumped the gun on Mohamed Kamara, taking him earlier than his grade liked. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Dallin Holker · TE · rank 145
They paid sticker price for Dallin Holker in pick No. 139, and that is fine. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · Frank Gore Jr. · RB · rank 171
A quiet steal in slot 182: Frank Gore Jr. for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 153
Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 224 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 151
Jaylin Simpson in pick 232 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
