Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Lions were there to profit. Jermod McCoy, the No. 18 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 6, Pick 24.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Job largely done: cornerback settled and 7 of 9 of the wish list covered.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Spencer Fano at pick No. 50 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Carnell Tate in Round 4, Pick 28 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Steal is underselling it; Kayden McDonald at the 132nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kenyon Sadiq at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Jordyn Tyson still on the board at pick 181. It fills a real need, too.
You do not let a linebacker like Sonny Styles reach slot 190 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Jermod McCoy at No. 205 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Akheem Mesidor all the way to Round 6, Pick 32, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Michael Taaffe in the 222nd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
