Boards are made to be trusted, and the Packers shredded theirs for J.J. Weaver. He came off 72 spots early, and the room will hear about it. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. It is not that Eichenberg is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Rakestraw Jr.. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They talked themselves into Jaden Hicks at the Round 2 slot, and the board did not agree. It adds depth where they could use a little.
You do not let a cornerback like Ennis Rakestraw Jr. reach pick 54 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 22 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Christian Mahogany at pick No. 88 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cedric Gray in the 91st pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Elijah Jones in No. 108 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tip Reiman in pick No. 119, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Brennan Jackson at the 120th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Tommy Eichenberg at linebacker with wide receiver and interior defensive lineman open.
They took Tykee Smith at par in slot 156, which is nothing to complain about. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Cody Schrader at Round 5, Pick 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joe Milton III well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They liked Garret Greenfield enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 202. The roster fit checks out.
Nathaniel Watson in pick No. 219 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They left a pile of value on the table to take J.J. Weaver this early at Round 7, Pick 25. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Brevyn Spann-Ford in No. 255. It fills a real need, too.
