You build a draft on nights like this. Ollie Gordon II had no business being available in the 217th overall pick, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Brock Bowers leading the way.
They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a cornerstone up front. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Tyler Booker at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kaleb Johnson in pick No. 69 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Maxwell Hairston at the 77th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. A minor itch, scratched.
Ozzy Trapilo in No. 106 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to slot 144, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Ollie Gordon II at the 217th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Luke Lachey higher than pick 220, and the tight end fell to them anyway. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
