You build a draft on nights like this. Andrew Mukuba had no business being available in Round 5, Pick 34, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want. Reaching for Collins left real value on the table behind him.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an every-down engine for the run game at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, Landon Jackson went about where he belonged in the 42nd overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They reached into another round for Alfred Collins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for TreVeyon Henderson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Steal is underselling it; Raheim Sanders at slot 169 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Cody Simon in the 170th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Lathan Ransom at pick 171 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
You do not let a safety like Andrew Mukuba reach pick No. 172 and blink. They did not. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Gunnar Helm at pick No. 173 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Danny Stutsman at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nice patience on Nazir Stackhouse, who had no business lasting to No. 187. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Jonah Coleman in slot 239, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taking Miles Frazier in pick 245 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
