The Trey Wedig selection is the head-turner. The Cowboys reached 139 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
The Ransom pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get a double-digit-sack hope, and a steal at that.
Luther Burden III slid further than he should have, and pick 34 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nick Emmanwori in slot 50 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Kaleb Johnson at pick No. 60 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Josaiah Stewart, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
By-the-book stuff, Deone Walker at the 79th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking TreVeyon Henderson in Round 4, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent slot 116 on Jared Ivey, an edge rusher they were not short of.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jordan Burch at edge rusher with quarterback open.
Nazir Stackhouse at the 134th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Bryce Foster, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They reached a country mile for Miles Frazier at pick 155, and the board is aghast. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Trey Wedig in the 169th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cody Simon in pick No. 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Elijah Arroyo in pick No. 171 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
A safety of that caliber at slot 172 is the definition of value, full stop. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Lathan Ransom in Round 6, Pick 2 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They talked themselves into Terrance Ferguson at No. 190, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Oscar Delp in pick 194 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Gentry Williams this early at the Round 6 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Somehow Raheim Sanders was still sitting there in the 200th overall pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
