Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Browns spent Round 6, Pick 25 on CJ Donaldson, a name the board had a full 97 spots lower. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
The Slaughter value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Justin Jefferson gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Kayden McDonald in pick No. 20 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
In pick 24 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value. More want than need.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Denzel Boston slipping to the 38th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Emmanuel Pregnon at the 39th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jake Slaughter at Round 3, Pick 6. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Caden Curry in No. 92, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Bryce Lance enough to skip the value, taking him in the 107th pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mike Washington Jr. at slot 108 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Jack Endries at pick No. 112, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Davison Igbinosun in the 125th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Kaleb Proctor in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Keagen Trost at pick 146, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Cole Payton. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into DJ Campbell at the 152nd pick, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taylen Green in pick No. 177 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for CJ Donaldson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Will Kacmarek in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
