The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The cost of the Hartman reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Getting Thomas Jr. where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 4 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
Nice patience on Brian Thomas Jr., who had no business lasting to Round 2, Pick 3. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jordan Morgan in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at slot 40 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Chris Braswell at the 48th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land T'Vondre Sweat in No. 71, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Bralen Trice at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Christian Jones in the 139th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 152; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevor Keegan. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A big swing on Sam Hartman at the 222nd overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
