This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Ryan Cooper Jr., the No. 230 name on the board, stolen at the 256th overall pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Nugent has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a matchup weapon at tight end. A real need, handled.
Kris Jenkins in slot 37 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Xavier Worthy in the Round 3 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A slide stopped in pick 106, with Trey Benson worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
By-the-book stuff, Kalen King at the 139th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Drake Nugent at pick No. 183 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nathaniel Watson at the 223rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Ryan Cooper Jr. in No. 256 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
