The Packers bet big and early on Will Putnam, 79 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. It does the job without flash, and the B+ reflects it.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Williams. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Bishop pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Circle this one: Kool-Aid McKinstry at the 41st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Quinyon Mitchell still on the board at the 60th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Brian Thomas Jr. in slot 63, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They let Blake Corum come to them and pounced at No. 88. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Jaden Hicks in pick No. 91; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The board had cheaper options than Cedric Gray at pick 126, and it noticed. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A curious use of the 129th overall pick. Edge rusher and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a safety in Cole Bishop did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Joe Milton III at No. 162, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylan Ford at the 201st pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
They will replay Cody Schrader at slot 203 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Josh Proctor at pick No. 206 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Austin Stogner at the Round 6 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sam Hartman at Round 6, Pick 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Will Putnam at Round 7, Pick 21 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Isaiah Williams at pick No. 243 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
They robbed the room for Kenny Logan Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
