Dallas Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D.

by Greatness · 2024 NFL Draft · 12 picks · 1 steals · 8 reaches
Value C+
Need B+
Trades F
Future A+

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jaylen Wright at the 125th pick is 38 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback and tight end.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.9 · Pick 9 · Marvin Harrison Jr. · WR · rank 1
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get a go-to option on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 56
In the 24th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 57
By-the-book stuff, Chris Braswell at No. 56 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 86
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at quarterback and tight end sat open.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 99
The board had cheaper options than Blake Fisher at the Round 3 slot, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Leonard Taylor III · DL · rank 113
A straight-up fair deal on Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 111, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 163
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Wright in the 125th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 189
They jumped the gun on Michael Barrett, taking him earlier than his grade liked. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 226
Tanor Bortolini at Round 6, Pick 38 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Trevor Keegan · OG · rank 251
They reached a country mile for Trevor Keegan at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.4 · Pick 224 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 232
A premium they did not need to pay, Jase McClellan a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Dwight McGlothern · CB · rank 280
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dwight McGlothern this early at pick 242. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
