The board owed the Chiefs one, and it paid up: Jarrian Jones, the No. 136 name on the board, sitting there at Round 5, Pick 23 like a gift left on the doorstep. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They read the board right and Xavier Worthy was the payoff at slot 64. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kris Abrams-Draine slipping to the 95th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They let Theo Johnson come to them and pounced at pick 132. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Jarrian Jones at Round 5, Pick 23 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
No edge and no loss on Khristian Boyd in No. 173; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kimani Vidal in pick No. 252 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
