The phones were a trap the Chargers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The warnings were there, and the F is the bill.
Whatever Caleb Williams becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The cost of the Weaver reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with wide receiver still staring back at them.

T'Vondre Sweat at the 33rd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jonathon Brooks at Round 2, Pick 26 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Cooper DeJean, who had no business lasting to slot 72. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They read the board right and Braelon Allen was the payoff at pick 108. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cade Stover at the 145th pick is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Burch went about where he belonged in pick No. 186. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
J.J. Weaver in No. 229 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
